The Washington Centre for Human Rights (WCHR) expresses profound concern over the recent escalation of violence between Iran and Israel, which has been further intensified by the United States’ military strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. On June 22, 2025, the U.S. conducted targeted attacks on Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan sites, actions described by American officials as overwhelmingly successful. While aimed at curbing nuclear proliferation, these strikes risk plunging the region into deeper instability and wider conflict.
In response, Iran has launched missile attacks on Israeli infrastructure, including Ben Gurion International Airport, while Israel continues its air operations against Iranian military targets. This dangerous cycle of retaliation has resulted in significant civilian casualties and widespread destruction, threatening the fragile peace of the Middle East and the security of the international community.
WCHR urges the United Nations Security Council to exercise its mandate to maintain international peace and security by facilitating an immediate cessation of hostilities and encouraging diplomatic dialogue. The involvement of European powers such as Germany, France, and the United Kingdom—who have long standing experience in Middle Eastern diplomacy and nuclear non-proliferation—is crucial in mediating this crisis and promoting restraint on all sides.
Moreover, the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, representing the collective voice of Muslim-majority nations, must actively engage to foster dialogue and reduce tensions. Saudi Arabia and France, as co-chairs of the forthcoming UN High-level International Conference on the peaceful resolution of the Palestinian question, have a unique opportunity to advance broader regional reconciliation efforts that could underpin lasting peace.
Oman’s discreet but effective role as a mediator between Iran and Western nations also positions it as a valuable facilitator for backchannel diplomacy aimed at de-escalating the current conflict.
WCHR stresses that military escalation will only deepen human suffering and destabilize a region already fraught with tension. It is imperative that all involved governments prioritize diplomatic engagement, adhere to international law, and work collectively to restore peace and stability.
The Washington Centre for Human Rights stands ready to support and collaborate with international efforts dedicated to safeguarding human rights and securing a peaceful future for the Middle East.
